Machine Learning Meets Multi-Omics for Precision Medicine
Simultaneous analysis of millions of individual cells empowered with machine learning has potential to revolutionize treatments of many challenging human diseases including cancer, inflammatory and neurological disorders.
Biology has become a data science. For instance, recent single-cell profiling technologies are capable of measuring thousands of variables for each of hundreds of thousands to millions of cells in a single sample. Machine learning models are beginning to provide significant improvements in extracting information sensitively and with speed from such datasets which are often high-dimensional, sparse, and complex. Consequently, last year has seen enormous advances in deep learning applications in a variety of single-cell omics assays including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and multi-omics integration. It is highly timely to discuss the potential impact of insights generated by multi-omics machine learning platforms on the patient journey, clinical research and wider pharmaceutical sector through this mini-conference.
We will cover examples and potential applications of deep learning on single-cell and other high throughput datasets in the context of:
Early diagnosis
Differential diagnosis against overlapping etiologies
Patient stratification for therapy
Design of clinical trials
Understanding disease mechanisms
Drug discovery and repurposing
Lifestyle decisions

Rice Ken Kennedy Institute Machine Learning Boot Camp
The Ken Kennedy Institute is putting on a Machine Learning Boot Camp for Executives and Beginners, happening in person in Houston May 19-20 at the BRC on Rice University campus. This two-day boot camp will provide a broad introduction to Machine Learning (ML) for executives and beginners. Our goal is to give a manager or a CEO in a field such as medicine, finance, manufacturing, or energy an introduction to the essential concepts behind Machine Learning. Additionally, this boot camp is great for non-practicing beginners looking to learn. Taught by a team of Rice professors in the computational sciences, the Machine Learning Boot Camp will integrate lectures describing the basic concepts to state-of-the-art Machine Learning.
The boot camp assumes no specific prerequisites and will highlight a broad set of concepts, ranging from classical supervised (e.g., linear regression, logistic regression and decision trees) and unsupervised methods (e.g., clustering algorithms, principal components analysis) to modern machine learning approaches (e.g., different neural network architectures, min-max games and generative models, deep reinforcement learning), with numerous case studies and applications. Throughout its duration, the workshop will provide practical suggestions to executives with DOs and DON’Ts when using Machine Learning in practice.
Prerequisites: A general level of familiarity with mathematics is assumed, including college-level calculus, though those without this background will still find the boot camp a useful introduction to modern ML.
This is an in person event only. The boot camp will not be live streamed or recorded.
